Ideas

Out and about

Celebrate the beautiful outdoors and each other, with these exciting ideas.

Bread run

A bread run (or something similar) can make a difference to people experiencing homelessness. This simple act can mean a lot and brighten their day.

Here are some considerations for holding such an event:

  • Ready to eat foods are best, such as non-perishables, as it might be difficult to access cooking and refrigeration facilities.
  • Always go in pairs or groups and have a person from your institution in charge to update on your location and the progress of your run.
  • Treat everyone respectfully and ensure they are comfortable chatting with you.
  • Politely excuse yourself from situations that you are uncomfortable with and check in with the person in charge.

Who has done it?

  • University of Western Australia
    • Bread run in support of Homelessness Prevention Week

Inter-university events

To make an even bigger impact, join a collective effort with other education providers and landcare groups. It's a great way to meet like-mided individuals and form new bonds!

Here are some considerations for organising an inter-university tree planting event:

  • Choose a location that's easily accessible for everyone. This will also ensure easy access for follow-ups and progress checks.
  • Ensure participants have adequate gloves, hats, tools, water, sunscreen, first aid gear and snacks especially if a hot day is predicted.
  • Promote the event with local landcare groups for added exposure.

Who has done it?

  • Western Australian Universities
    • University of Western Australia Guild Volunteering Hub, Edith Cowan University, Curtin University, Murdoch University and University of Notre Dame Australia planted 2,111 native seedlings in less than 2 hours for their inter-university activity

Volunteering days

Host an event with a local nonprofit or community group where students can get a taste of what it's like to volunteer.

Here are some considerations for organising a volunteering day:

  • As it's an off campus event, the safety of students must be foremost.
  • Plan events that will make an emotional impact on students and encourage them to continue volunteering into the future.
  • Working together with nonprofits, community groups, and other universities is a great way to pool resources and be able to undertake larger projects and increase exposure.
