Have students learn through discussions, open forums, networking and from guest presenters.

Campfire session

There’s no better way to fully involve people than by making them the main part in a campfire session.

It consists of a traditional presentation, with a speaker at the front of the room who is presenting an idea to a group of people, but the added value is that after 15/20 minutes the focus shifts from the presenter to the audience.

The aim is to create an open forum where all the attendees generate the majority of the discussion and knowledge sharing.

Here are some considerations when organising a campfire session:

  • The presenter becomes a facilitator, inviting responses to comments and questions from those around the room.
  • The audience should dictate the ultimate direction of the conversation.
  • Let the attendees drive their own learning, listen to multiple perspectives on the same issue and share experiences with individuals throughout the room.

Here are some ideas of three different formats that you could organise your campfire session:

  • Continue the conversation – Deeper dive into conversations with speakers to discuss and question following other educational presentations.
  • Peer-to-peer knowledge exchanges – Discuss defined topics and exchange ideas in an informal learning environment.
  • Ask the experts – Experts lead discussions on volunteering’s hottest topics.

Workshops

Facilitated and interactive workshops are dynamic and benefit both the presenter and attendees. They can generate new ideas and healthy discussions on relevant issues around encouraging community participation. 

Here are some considerations when organising a workshop:

  • Invite a wide range of speakers from the nonprofit sector. Include student leaders, industry representatives, career counsellors and student engagement officers to speak at your event. 
  • The workshop should be situated at a place where there is ample room for both presentation and interaction.
  • Have a planned topic/issue to be discussed at the workshop before sourcing for relevant speakers.
  • Ensure equipment has been tested with backup systems in place in case of any issues. 
  • Combine these sessions with a volunteering expo afterwards so that inspired, enthusiastic students can easily find an opportunity to help straight away.

Guest presenters

Having guest speakers, presentations, and networking sessions are great ways for students to get more in-depth information on volunteering as well as inspire them to get involved.

Here are some considerations for having these sessions:

  • Invite speakers from nonprofit and philanthropic organisations that work closely with volunteers to talk about their experiences in the sector. Have a list of possible social issues that students are concerned with and look for speakers in those areas.
  • Existing student volunteers could share their personal stories about volunteering. Employers could talk about the career benefits and how graduates with volunteer experience would be viewed favourably.
  • Combine these sessions with a volunteering expo afterwards so that inspired, enthusiastic students can easily find an opportunity to help straight away.
