Conservation Volunteers Australia - Hamilton Bandicoot Enclosure

The Eastern Barred Bandicoot was historically common throughout the Basalt Plains grasslands (between Melbourne and Hamilton). Increased urbanisation and agricultural pressure, coupled with predation from cats, dogs and the introduced fox, has left this unique species extinct in the wild.

Did you know the last wild population of the Eastern Barred Bandicoot was found in Hamilton? They were residing in old car bodies in the local tip. Since then a captive breeding program was started and the Eastern Barred Bandicoot Recovery team was formed to help bring their numbers back up to a sustainable level.

Hamilton’s local Bandicoot enclosure is bringing us one step closer to achieving this outcome. Join Conservation Volunteers Australia today for some regular weekly maintenance they need to complete to keep the enclosure in top condition for our furry friends.

Tasks will include:

  • Walk around the fence perimeter
  • Maintain and any damage and animal diggings on/close by to the fence line
  • Removal of any unwanted weeds and rubbish along the fence line
  • Camera checks
