Restoring Unique Habitats at Vernal Pools, Mawson Lakes

Conservation Volunteers Australia has a Community Planting event scheduled for Friday 17 August at the Vernal Pools, Mawson Lakes.

Vernal pools are a unique ecosystem that provides habitat for specialised plants and animals that have evolved specifically to survive the seasonal changes that occur in these pools. The existence of vernal pools at Parafield Airport was only discovered in 2001, and prior to this the land had been used for farming, grazing and a golf driving range, resulting in the pools being heavily degraded.

Since 2015, CVA has been engaged by the Adelaide Airport to assist with restoration activities within the Vernal Pools Conservation Zone to the south of Elder Smith Road. CVA volunteers have been engaged to help restore this unique site by addressing issues such as weed management, seed collection and reintroducing local plants.

This is a great opportunity to learn about this rare habitat in the heart of suburbia. Join us on the journey!
