TUU ‘Empowered Community’ series with Empowered Communities: A Panel Discussion

TUU ‘Empowered Community’ series with Empowered Communities: A Panel Discussion

Through this series, we aim to empower the UTAS community to connect and make a difference, instilling a sense of compassion, care and community as respected and valued members of the University. The TUU endeavours to achieve this by supporting and assisting UTAS students with their own development, as well as providing a forum to promote all causes for the betterment of our communities. Most importantly, we hope that this project will celebrate our community for all that they are and all that they do.

The opening event for our series will be a panel discussion on the importance of empowering our local and global communities.

During this discussion we will be discussing the importance of empowerment at a holistic level – with a particular focus on women’s advancement, LGBTQI rights, student’s rights at work and creating a more sustainable world.

The panel will include:

  • Robin Banks - Former Tasmanian Anti-Discrimination Commissioner (2010-17)
  • Ginna Webster - Secretary of the Department of Communites Tasmania
  • Danny Carney - Campaigner at the Wilderness Society, Board Member at Source Community Wholefoods, Cultural Researcher at Threads of Life, Bali and Indonesian Lecturer, UTAS.
  • Angela Wilson - Founder of WoMo, founder of Awake Consulting, Board Member of the Tasmanian Women’s Legal Service and Tasmanian Convenor of the Australian Republican Movement.
  • Mitch McPherson - Founder of Speak Up, Stay Chatty

At the conclusion of this event we will hear a 10 minute presentation from Millie Rooney, Sustainability Officer at the University of Tasmania.
