Restoring Tasmania's Ruins

Restoring Tasmania's Ruins

Students can volunteer with Conservation Volunteers Australia to help conserve Australia's World Heritage Convict Past.

The Coal Mines Historic Site at Saltwater River on the Tasman Peninsular was Tasmania's first mechanised mine and served as a place of punishment for the 'worst class' of convicts from Port Arthur. Now it is a picturesque site overlooking Norfolk Bay with historic ruins nestled in native bushland. There will be various activities aimed at conserving the site and its heritage such as; fuel load reduction, weed eradication, planting, visitor surveys, coastal protection and track maintenance. Additional activities will be included over time.

Join the team to help preserve this unique and special place.
