Very often when starting out on their careers, new graduates come up against that bewildering situation: they need experience before many employers will consider them but they need a job in order to get that experience.
Volunteer placements can provide valuable work experience and be a crucial first step to securing a full or part-time position in the industry of your choice. Most employers prefer to hire ‘experienced’ staff, but often even a few months’ casual-volunteer work can be enough to give employers the extra confidence they need before they are willing to take the chance on you.
Volunteer placements offer a range of benefits that can be valuable not only in the short-term in helping secure a job, but also in the development of skills and contacts that can be useful long into your career.
The University of the Sunshine Coast, Career Development Team is holding a Volunteer Expo to coincide with National Student Volunteer Week.
When deciding on a volunteer placement, it is important to try and choose one that is going to be of maximum benefit to you and your career prospects. A diverse list of carefully selected local organisations will be attending campus for students (from all disciplines) to discover a wide range of volunteering roles and to network with key people.
This event is free of cost to both students and volunteer organisations.
