Conservation Volunteers will be carrying out a biodiversity protection activity as they help to remove noxious weeds from the picturesque hills surrounding Jerrabomberra. If not controlled invasive weeds can take over an area quickly, leaving no room for native species. By helping with these activities you will assist the native plants and vegetation to grow helping to restore native ecosystems.
You will be out in the fresh air getting your hands dirty to help care for the local environment. Weeding is a very important conservation activity as weeds out-compete native plants, which means lower habitat quality for native birds and animals. Weeds can also be bad for streams and other waterways if they clog them with their roots or allow high levels of runoff, which lowers water quality.
What you can expect:
- Weeding
- Creating biodiversity in a beautiful hilly ecosystem
- Being out in nature with nice people
- Learning about a local ecosystem
- Helping look after the land
- Recognition of your efforts
Additional notes:
Conservation Volunteers provide transport to and from the project location. The first pick up point is the gravel car park on Angas Street at the bottom of the Majura Oval at 7.40am. There is free parking there. The second is opposite the Canberra YHA on Akuna Street at 8am. We generally make it back to town at 4pm.
All you need to bring with you is food and plenty of water for the day, and appropriate clothing for being out and about in the great outdoors: long pants, long sleeved shirt, a hat, sturdy shoes, and work gloves if you own a pair. All equipment, safety gear and tools are provided by Conservation Volunteers.
