Marine Debris Survey and Clean-Up - Conservation Volunteers Australia event

Marine Debris Survey and Clean-Up - Conservation Volunteers Australia event

Currently 18,000 pieces of plastic are estimated to float in every square kilometre of ocean. 276 species worldwide including 77 Australian species are impacted by marine debris. Not only does the removal of marine debris reduce the negative impact it has on both local and worldwide wildlife but if we can determine the source of the debris, we can target those sources to reduce waste.

Volunteer tasks include:

  • Picking up marine debris
  • Sorting debris into categories
  • Weighing rubbish
  • Recording data

We will be focusing on a 2 kilometre section of Four Mile Beach, beginning at Bruno Reidwig Park at the end of Solander Boulevard, and finishing at the beach entrance for Portsea Resort.

Volunteers will then be transported back to Bruno Reidwig Park (you don't have to walk all the way back!) and presented with a ight lunch of fresh fruits, cake, and yummy dips. After lunch, we will sort out the debris found, recording and collate the data and then finish for the day.

Please bring:

  • Hat
  • Enclosed shoes
  • Water bottle
  • Sunglasses

Debris collection bags provided. Free transportation from Cairns provided - please contact for details.
